Paving in a Historic Company Town
Asphalt paving in Clyde means working on some of the oldest planned housing in the county. Clyde was built in 1917 with a federal loan as a company town for the Pacific Coast Shipbuilding Company, and architect Bernard Maybeck laid out the town and designed around 200 of the first homes. The whole community covers just 0.14 square miles. Driveways here are often narrow and short, squeezed between homes that predate modern cars.
Small jobs done carefully
Narrow access and old landscaping mean many Clyde driveways are paved with smaller equipment and some hand work. We protect existing walls, steps and plantings, match grades to old garage floors, and make sure water drains away from foundations that were never designed for modern runoff.
County right-of-way
Clyde is unincorporated, six miles east of Martinez, so work in the road right-of-way falls under Contra Costa County Public Works. The County requires an encroachment permit for that work and notice to its inspector at least two working days before starting.
Respecting the setting
Owners of older homes often prefer driveways that suit the house. We can keep a driveway to its original footprint, edge it neatly, and recommend a finish that fits the street.
Working with older construction
Clyde's homes were built between 1917 and the years that followed, long before modern building codes and two-car households. Driveways often run beside the house, with little room for equipment and old foundations close to the pavement. We protect foundations by grading the new surface away from the house and by not over-compacting near old walls. Where a driveway meets a garage or carriage house of that era, the floor may be lower than the driveway; we look for ways to keep water out of it. Clyde's 291 homes have almost no vacancy, so neighbors are close; we keep work tidy and keep driveways and streets clear.
